Shhh! I Have A Secret!!

Are you wondering what I am talking about? Could it be that my sister and I love to eat at Ted's Escondido's Mexican Restaurant, especially for our birthdays each year? This year, we had lunch first and then celebrated at our normal "haunt" ....

I really don't know why it's taken this long for me to tell anyone! It wasn't my intention to keep it a secret. It's possible that I was being selfish or that I just hadn't been ready to "share" our annual birthday celebration at the Renaissance Salon & Day Spa here in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We always have such a fantastic time and leave feeling so relaxed, there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be telling everyone!!

One of the things that we look forward to each year is the relaxing hour long body massage. This year, my sister scheduled us for the ninety minute massage, mostly to see if an additional half hour made a difference. We enjoyed the longer massage appointment and have decided to make it part of our "revised" birthday celebration each year!

Another ritual that we indulge in during our visit to the spa is letting someone pamper us with paraffin based manicure and a relaxing foot soak with a pedicure. This year, they did our fingernails before our feet, giving our hands more time to dry before it was time to leave.

As a parent of a child with autism, I really look forward to my birthday celebration and getting to spend it with my sister is a BONUS! The day before my sixth birthday, I was blessed with a new sister and a swing set. I had been an only child up to that point and wasn't so sure about having to share the spotlight with a new baby sister. I have come to my senses, though...I am proud to have such a wonderful sister and that we were both born as Mother's Day girls! And to be able to share our birthday is even more fabulous!!

  1. Absolutely love our spa-birthday tradition and totally agree that the upgrade to a 90 minute body massage was one of the best ideas I've had all year. That extra 30 minutes was just the trick to help with mental and physical exhaustion. The girls at Renaissance Salon and Day Spa are amazing!
Can't say I know what it's like to have a baby sister but I'm sure they can be pests....stealing clothes from your closet, borrowing make-up, eaves dropping on your phone calls and mimicking your every action to try to be exactly like their hero, the big sister. I am guilty of all the annoying acts of being the baby sister but who wouldn't want to be just like their big sister especially when she's as awesome as mine! So glad I finally measure up to that swing set! :) I am proud to be the baby sister to such a strong, caring, motivating and beautiful woman! Love ya sis!

    1. I agree about the girls at Renaissance Salon and Day Spa being AMAZING and YOU having GREAT ideas!! Matt had given me a gift certificate for Christmas to the very same place, right before I had Vincent and I absolutely loved it!!! Until you came up with the idea for us to go there for our birthday two years ago, I hadn't found time, or the excuse, to return! It happened at the very time that I needed it the most...I had "lost" myself in Nathan's autism diagnosis, going to 1st grade with him and advocating for special needs children's educational rights!!
As a big sister, I was guilty for constantly picking on you and our little brother. I was confused about what was important in life and, after all these years, have to admit that you were the best thing that ever happened to me! That swing set was just a possession that eventually disappeared over time, and you became an important figure in my life. If I had not had you as my sister, I would not be a big sister and know what it was like to have had the best relationship in the world!! And you are my hero, as well! Having a career, raising my nieces and nephew, finding time to take care of your ol' sis and still manage to have the energy to take on home repairs!! We should try to get the family together July 4th for a cookout at my house, if it works for your schedule! {hugs} I love you, sis!

  2. Happy birthday, dear friend of mine. I must admit that I am jealous of both the birthday spa tradition and and the awesome sister to share it with. I hope the rest of your day was everything you hoped for and more. *hugs*

    1. Thank you, Lizze! I was afraid that this year might not have worked out for me. The only available surgery date for my laproscopy was three days before our spa date. My doctor told me that I could keep the appointment for our day spa but, I would have low energy, I would be tender around the incision sites and should drink plenty of water. For me, it was a very relaxing day and the best birthday yet!
